Perimenopause represents a pivotal phase in a woman's life, characterized by irregular menstrual cycles and diminished hormone production. It signifies the transitional period between the fertile years and menopause, during which ovarian activity declines gradually.
As ovarian hormone production slows down, the adrenal glands assume some responsibility for sex hormone production, however not to the same extent as the ovaries.
The onset of perimenopause is not dictated by a specific age, but rather spans a broad range from the mid-30s to mid-50s. Similarly, the duration of perimenopause varies individually, though typically averaging around four years.
While symptoms may vary, irregular periods are a hallmark indication of perimenopause. Hormonal fluctuations lead to shorter menstrual cycles early in perimenopause, accompanied by symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disturbances, altered sexual function, weight fluctuations, and mood changes.
Conducting laboratory tests during perimenopause is crucial. It allows for the assessment of various health markers affected by these shifting hormones.Â
