Osteopathic Treatment for Insomnia

Sleep is extremely important in today's hustle-culture, with the requirements to keep up with careers, family obligations, bills, housekeeping, healthy exercise, and meal prepping, it can seem like there’s no time for proper sleep.

I’ve heard some patients express that they didn’t have to sleep and wonder what’s the purpose. Sleep is incredibly important for physical restoration in which the body undergoes processes like tissue repair, muscle growth and the release of growth hormones, contributing to overall physical health and recovery. Sleep also helps with cognitive function such as memory consolidation, problem-solving, and learning. It supports mental clarity and enhances creativity.

As a Manual Osteopathic Practitioner I’m interested beyond your physical health and encourage proper sleep for a more stable emotional well-being as quality sleep plays a vital role in regulating mood. Lack of sleep can contribute to irritability, stress and an increased susceptibility to mood disorders.

Now that we have a better idea of why we require adequate sleep, let’s talk a bit about insomnia. Insomnia is characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing non-restorative sleep. Insomnia causes daytime fatigue, hormone disruption, altered immune function, mood disturbances, irritability, and challenges with concentration and memory.

Chances are, you or someone you know has struggled with insomnia at some point. Studies suggest about 30% of adults experience symptoms of insomnia with varying degrees of severity.

People often disclose they would rather find natural and holistic methods to help them sleep instead of relying on sleep medications. Manual osteopathy is a non intrusive and gentle method to help restore you for better sleep. Here are some ways a manual osteopathy treatment can help you:

  1. Stress reduction: osteopathic techniques can promote relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety which often contribute to insomnia.

  2. Improved circulation: enhancing blood flow through manual manipulations may contribute to better oxygenation of tissues, potentially aiding sleep.

  3. Balancing the autonomic nervous system: osteopathy aims to restore balance to the autonomic nervous system, which plays a role in regulating sleep-wake cycle.

  4. Muscle tension release: osteopathic manipulations may target muscle tension, helping to alleviate discomfort and promoting a more comfortable sleep environment.

  5. Addressing structural imbalances: osteopathic treatments focus on musculoskeletal alignment, potentially addressing structural issues that could contribute to sleep disturbances.

I'm committed to help people lead their best and healthier lives which definitely includes an improved sleep cycle. In an osteopathic manual treatment with me, I will go over some of these techniques, give you suggestions about sleep positions and other methods to support an environment that allows you to have deep, restful sleep.
